30 Practical Ways to Cut Expenses
With the high cost of gas and groceries these days it is a wonder anyone can make ends meet. You might feel like your budget is already stretched as thin as it can go but you would be surprised. Here are 30 ways to cut expenses. Try just a few of them and see if you can start saving more of your paycheck each week.
1. Cut back on energy costs whenever possible. Hang clothes instead of using your dryer whenever possible (outdoors in nice weather and inside on racks during bad weather). Use energy saving CFL lights. Get in the habit of turning off lights and appliances when you leave a room.
2. Instead of going to the movies rent or borrow one. If you must go to the movies go to an early matinee and save some money.
3. Instead of meeting friends for coffee or drinks invite them over for potluck. Take turns each week at each others house.
4. Take your lunch to work more often. Your savings will really add up!
5. Carpool to work whenever possible.
6. Go generic on prescription and over the counter drugs whenever possible.
7. Use coupons while shopping at grocery stores, and always shop according to a list. Preferably shop on double-coupon days. Maybe, you can buy supplies from bulk food warehouses.
8. Try to limit long distance calls to nights and weekends unless you have an unlimited calling plan.
9. At the end of the day get into the habit of putting all your spare change in a jar. Once it is full roll it and put it in a savings account. Some banks will even count it for you for free.
10. Never pay full price for clothing. Check the sales flyers in your Sunday paper. Why pay full price on a pair of jeans at one store when another store is having a sale?
11. Can anyone really afford cigarettes anymore? For the sake of your budget and your health now is a good time to quit.
12. Install a water saver type shower head.
13. Save the cost of a gym membership and work out at home.
14. Maintain your car yourself - i.e., do basic stuff like changing the oil, washing it, etc.
15. Dollar stores are a great place to stock up on items such as wrapping paper, gift cards, gift bags, etc.
16. Do you have high interest credit cards? Consider refinancing or making power payments each month (making more than the minimum payments).
17. Eat out less. Try to keep stocked up on the ingredients for quick meals to keep from going through the drive-thru on days you are just too tired to cook.
18. When shopping for large ticket items it pays to shop around. Some stores will even match competitor prices.
19. In the market for a new home? Find a home under the price the your bank has pre-approved you for. With more affordable payments you may even be able to pay a little extra on your mortgage each month.
20. Try Freecycle.org for getting and receiving unwanted items for free. One man's trash is another man's treasure!
21. Stick with the cheapest cable plan you can get. Check your local library to borrow video tapes and dvds for free.
22. We all like to splurge once in a while on things like manicures but if are trying to save money consider doing this yourself.
23. Having a savings account just for emergencies is a must! Otherwise you'll end up resorting to credit cards. Try to put away just $5.00-$10.00 per week away and watch it add up. As you pay off debt increase your savings.
24. Save on dry cleaning costs by purchasing items that can be washed at home.
25. Shop around for cheaper car insurance, homeowners, etc.
26. Drink more water. Sugary soft drinks should be an occasional treat instead of an everyday staple.
27. Have a rummage sale or check out local consignment shops. They will either give you a set price for all your stuff or, sell your items and share the commission with you.
28. Don't be late in paying your bills - the interest can be killing.
29. Try your hand at gardening. If you are limited on space check online for information on raised beds or container gardening.
30. If there is some luxury that you can not live without then by all means try to figure it into your budget once in a while. We all deserve a little luxury in our lives!
Whether you try just a few of these tips or all of them, these tips can really help you stretch your budget.
