<h2>The Dawning of Light</h2> <p> Travel to the Giza plateau became a dangerous undertaking in the eighteenth century. Though Egypt was still nominally under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Turks, the traveler was likely to be robbed or killed by gangs of bandit or Arabs.<br /><br />It was during the era of George Washington that interest in the Great Pyramid was renewed and new discoveries made. Edward Worthly Montague escorted Mr. Nathaniel Davison while he was on vacation and together they carefully explored the great pyramid<br /><br />The adventuresome Davison lowered a lamp into the "well," tied a rope around his waist, and had himself carefully lowered into its ominous darkness, well over a hundred feet, only to find the bottom blocked with sand and rubbish.<br /><br />The perplexing question that coused over Davison's mind was how and why would anyone dig a 200 ft shaft into solid granite, only to come to a dead end? To him there seemed no apparent purpose.<br /><br />Perplexed by the unanswerable dilemma Davison began to search other areas to discover other secret features.
