A gradual change later on to a different brand of food is much easier on everyone involved. Obviously, he will also need water readily available, and some toys to keep him occupied and entertained.<br /><br />When going to get your puppy, a few key things to have on hand are a dog bed or a puppy-sized basket, chew toys, and a cozy blanket for the ride home. Try to keep your puppy comfortable and entertained to fend off any uneasiness. Calmly comfort him if he seems to be getting fearful or upset.<br /><br />Even though everyone at home will be excited to meet him, try to introduce him calmly to the other members of the family. Take him through the house so he can start to get comfortable with his new home.<br /><br />Every puppy needs his own little space and you should make sure you have all the right things before bringing your puppy home. You can do this by picking out a spot for him beforehand. Set down a dog bed, some toys, and a water bowl in an area you can devote for him. Gently encourage him to sleep and play in this spot, but don't be too overbearing. Let him explore and claim it on his own.<br /><br />Don't feed your puppy too much on the first day because he might be overwhelmed and not be very hungry. He will have to go to the bathroom frequently. You can start teaching him where to go on the first day, but don't expect instant success. It is better to try to anticipate when he has to go and get him outside quickly, praising him when he succeeds in going "potty".<br /><br />When adopting a puppy, you want to be sure to set aside more time than usual during that first week to spend with your new pup. This shouldn't be too hard since most anyone I know who has a new puppy can't wait to spend time with him!
