Pug Dog Health Care Tips

Pugs are quite popular today not only for their pleasing personality, but also for their loyal companionship. Although generally quite healthy, there are some pug dog health concerns that are specific to this breed of dog.

This ancient breed has actually been around since about 400 BC and is a member of the AKC Toy Group. Its elf like features - the wrinkly flat face, short hair and curly tail makes it one of the most endearing breeds. Having a thickset body, the weight of a pug ranges from 13 to 20 pounds and the height from 10 to 14 inches.

As it usually is in nature, some of the very things which make a pug so cute and adorable are also the very things that require a little bit of extra care in order to avoid some of the health problems specific to the breed.

One of this is the dog's wrinkly skin. The folds of the skin create pockets which can collect dirt and bacteria which can cause infection to set in. Therefore, you must take care to keep your dog clean, bath him properly, and make sure you clean out inside the folds of the wrinkles. If you notice any sign of infection, take your pet to your veterinarian right away.

One of the most distinguishable feature of the pug is their eyes. The position of their face and the shape of the eyes make them at risk to injury and complications because their eyes are not well protected. Constantly check your pet's eye and if you notice any ulceration, take your dog to the vet immediately.

If allowed, pugs will eat to excess. Watch your pet's food intake carefully to keep him at a healthy weight -- being overweight could adversely affect a pets health as much as it would a person's.

Pugs are also sensitive to very hot temperatures so you need to be careful not to keep your pet under extreme conditions for long time. Never keep your dog outside where there is no shade or locked up in a car during summers. Overheating can make breathing difficult for pugs.

Of course, like any dog, taking proper care of your pug and taking him to the vet for regular visits is the best way to insure good pug dog health. Take care of your pug responsibly and you'll have your companion healthy and happy for many years to come.
