How to rehydrate your Cuban cigar
Cuban cigars, just like any cigars, dry up after a certain amount of time in less than favorable conditions. Maybe you got a box of Cuban cigars, placed it in the closet and forgot about it. Several weeks down the road when you started cleaning your closet, out pops that box. The sad part is, your Cuban cigars look totally dried out.
Even though they were in the humidor at the time, without recharging it, it may not have kept the relative humidity that was necessary to keep them moist. What you end up with is a box of dry, unusable cigars. But are they actually unusable?
If you are looking for a how to rehydrate cigar process so that you are able to smoke it properly, there are actually several different methods that you can use. Some of them, however, work much better as a result of them working for a longer period of time. One of the things that you don't want to do whenever you are re-hydrating a cigar is allow it to take on moisture to quickly. If it has been completely dried out, you need to make sure that you reintroduce it to a hydrated level slowly so that it does not crack or peel in the process. Of course, a totally dry cigar may never actually be able to be re-hydrated to the point where it is smokable. Unfortunately, there is little that you can do in these cases.
A quick and easy way to rehydrate a cigar if it has become slightly dry is to put it in a plastic bag with some cedar linings out of a cigar box. Seal the bag for several days and then check to see how hydrated the cigars have become. This is not a cure for cigars that have been left on the shelf for several years. This is simply a way to add a little bit of hydration and to some cigars that have been left to dry out just a little bit.
For completely dried up cigars, the process is very different. I suggest get some flat bottom based Tupperware, fill the base with water and cover it with cedar strips. Make sure the cedar strips remain dry as you will be placing your Cuban cigar on top of it. Put it in their and let your cigar 'recover' slowly. It might take months but once it gets back to life, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Place these and a fully charged humidor into the container and seal it almost completely. Just leave a very slight opening in case the humidity levels get a little bit too high. Although it may take four weeks or more in order to totally rehydrate the cigars, many times they are salvageable even if they have been left for far too long.
