Amenities

Many people who are in the profession of teaching look forward to working overseas in many countries as teachers. Many people take the opportunity of working in Korea. Korea is located on the Korean peninsula in North-east Asia. Its capitals are Seoul and Pyongyang. Its official language is Korean which belongs to the Altaic language family.

In the mid 1990s Korea occupied a position in the world map as a place ESL instructor could earn a small fortune teaching English to learners of English as a second and foreign language. The salary for all the ESL teaching positions in Korea range from 1 million to 2.5 million Won (Korean currency). One must procure the appropriate employment visa in order to work or to begin teaching English in Korea. The contracts include provisions for salary, housing, tickets home, working hours, class size, severance pay, taxes and medical insurance. It is a headache to look for housing in Seoul. In other major towns in Korea this is less of a problem. There are several housing options. For instance, you can opt for the ones on basis of payments at the end of per year or per month. You may like to opt for a dormitory or housing on share basis. There are also the inns or lodges.

Some institutes provide tickets home upon completion of a contract or to reimburse teachers for the trip to Korea. Seoul, Hanyang, Konkuk, and Hankook Universities provide dormitory accommodations. There is an International House run by the Korea Research Foundation. It is purposed for the students coming from foreign lands. At times foreign instructors are recruited in such places as this, but the regular teachers are the ones who are generally preferred. Some people opt for shared housing. Lodging houses or Hasuks in Korean are popular with young Koreans in college or those who are just starting their careers. Single rooms are available at around US$ 500 per month. They include Korean style breakfast and dinner and laundry service at times.

If you plan on teaching English in Korea you may want to consider staying with a local family. Staying with a local family gives the added advantage of experiencing Korean life and culture. You can also rent a room in a yokwan (inn). You have too pay a monthly rent. It is like staying in a lodging house and no food is provided. You can search the internet for blacklists (orgreylists) that would warn you against working anywhere.

The Chunsee form of payment of money also is applied. The system involves advance payment of one year’s rent. In this case, monthly rents are no more needed to be paid. As the contract period is over, the Chunsee is returned to the renter against no charges as interest. Chunsee payments run from a minimum of 20 million won to 500 million won. The places of stay may vary. According to Korean law, all full-time employees, Korean or foreign are entitled to severance pay of one month’s salary for each year of employment. Two weeks paid vacation is also available apart from the other amenities provided.
