A lot of the Hawaiian kings made Kona their home, probably because of the great location and the climate. The missionaries made later Kona into a seaport with a lot of houses and churches being built. Kailua Pier is found in the middle of the city and is the place to be at sunset. Here you can experience amazing sunsets and also have a good view of the area.<br /><br />Next to the pier you also find Kamakahonu Beach, which is a calm beach that offers you smooth sand and gentle waves. It's a great place to spend the day for some swimming and relaxing in the sun. Here you can also find a good range of beach activities, such as canoe rentals and snorkeling.<br /><br />Along the seaside you find the main street Ali'i Drive. This is probably where you'll be spending most of your time in Kona, since most activities are located here. This is where most hotels,restaurants and shops can be found and also a good amount of the cultural and historical sites.<br /><br />Since the city is located close to Kona Airport, it's easy to get to and makes it the perfect spot to have as your main location while staying at the Big Island. From here you can go on cruises and charter boats and around the area you can find activities such as horse-back riding and hiking.<br /><br />Have fun exploring this city, with its great mixture of modern and ancient.
